There are many types of dog crates, and variations within the types. When looking for a crate for your puppy or dog remember this will be their home. Take some time to really search for the right type and size that would fit the dogs needs and yours. You thought through your choice of a home, give your dogs home the same thought.
The size of your puppy/dog will depend on the size dog crate you will need. Some crates come with a dividers to adjust the size crate to the growth of the puppy. In general the dog should be able to stand and turn around. To help you with your search here is some details about the different types that are offered.
Solid plastic dog crates are sturdy with openings near the top for air flow. Air flow is required for secure travel, such as in an airplane. They might also be safer in a car accident than other types. The door is a squeeze latch which offers good security and one-handed operation. The plastic makes it easier to clean. There are some disadvantages with a plastic dog crate. Not all plastic crates can be taken apart when not used so they take up space. Since the crate has openings near the top the dog has limited sight to see things going on around him.
Aluminium and wire dog crates are very similar. The aluminium crate can be either fixed or folding. These crates are light weight. When constructed properly they can be very sturdy and they don’t rust. Wire crates usually can be folded for storage or transport, although it might be difficult to do and they are fairly heavy for their size. Both aluminium and wire crate have excellent airflow and vision for the dogs. They are both suitable for use at veterinary hospitals, car travel, as a permanent “den” for your dog inside the home and in breeding kennel environments. There are a variety of covers and pads available to make crates safe and more comfortable. Wire crates are also popular at dog shows; they allow the dog to be clearly seen by spectators, and the sashes, rosettes and ribbons won can be hung on the crate for display.
Soft dog crates can be easily folded for storage or transporting along with being lightweight. They provide the dog with a stronger sense of security in strange places while still allowing visibility and airflow. They cannot be used with dogs who are likely to dig or chew at their crate. Soft crates are not suitable for transporting dogs in any type of vehicle. Dog tents are a new alternative to soft crates. They offer many of the same advantages and disadvantages of soft crates. They fold down to an even smaller size than the soft crate and are super lightweight so they can be stuffed into tent bags and taken virtually anywhere. They make ideal crates for people who need to pack their crates into cramped vehicles, suitcases or for people who hike, camp or are involved in dog sports. Like soft crates, dog tents are not suitable for puppies, dogs who are not housebroken, or for vehicle travel.
Research the different styles of dog crates and sizing available to ensure you will have the right home for your dog. As mentioned above there are advantages and disadvantage to the different types of crates (plastic, soft-sided, wire) offered. Think about how the crate will be used can help with your choice of homes for your dog.
