Manchester City could wrap up the title at home to Manchester United

Manchester City could wrap up the title at home against Manchester United after Jose Mourinho’s men suffered a 1-0 defeat at Newcastle United on Sunday.

The Premier League leaders went 16 points clear at the top of the table with a 5-1 win over Leicester City on Saturday evening.

Man United’s blunt-edged display at St James’ Park means that Pep Guardiola’s side could claim the title in just six games.

And yes, that sixth game comes at home to United on April 7, giving Man City the chance to reflect their supremacy over their neighbours this season by clinching the title with a win over Mourinho.

Both United and City would need to win their next five games for this to happen. Dropped points against either Chelsea or Liverpool at home, however, will mean City could claim the Premier League crown before then, leaving open the galling prospect of having to give them a guard of honour in front of their supporters.

If they progress past Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup fifth round next weekend then their clash with Brighton and Hove Albion on March 17 would be postponed, meaning victory over United would leave them just one win away from the title.

An unlikely prospect, then, but one still very much alive and menacingly lingering in the distance. If anything, perhaps a mauling at the Ethiad, followed by unbridled celebrations, would serve as an important kick up the backside ahead of next season.

Man City surprise: Ederson’s shock contract offer

Man City & Ederson

According to the Sun on Tuesday morning, Manchester City are gearing up to lock Ederson down to a new contract.

That’s something of a surprise as the Brazilian number two only joined Man City seven months ago from Benfica.

Many questioned whether Man City’s £34 million investment in Ederson was smart business. But nowadays it’s easy to argue that Pep Guardiola picked up a bargain when the South American signed.

Only Man United (19) have conceded less than Man City (20) this season.

Ederson has kept 12 clean sheets in his first season in the Premier League. While he’s challenged the stereotype of what a goalie does in a game with his fabulous array of passes.

Ederson’s shock City contract offer

The Sun are sketchy on all the details of a possible new deal for Ederson.

The tabloid have no idea when the deal is coming, how long it will survive for, or any of the financials associated with the agreement. Instead readers are told:

Etihad chiefs want to reward him with fresh terms, upping his lowly £70,000-a-week wages.

He is contracted until 2022, but Guardiola believes he can be City’s number one for nearly the next decade.

Loooocoo… What was the sun doing at the end of the game mendy?😂😂😂

Basel vs Manchester City

How many people will be tuning into this match on Tuesday night?

While the lion’s share of the attention in the Champions League tonight will be on the Juventus vs Tottenham game, Pep Guardiola will be hoping to avoid any slip up in Switzerland.

Basel are arguably the weakest team left in the UCL, and Man City should have no problems reaching the quarterfinals.

In a welcome shock for the Sky Blues, it’s believed Leroy Sane may be in the starting XI in his standard left-wing role.

Why Laporte missed Man City training ahead of Basel

The reason behind Aymeric Laporte’s absence from Manchester City training earlier today has been revealed this evening, ahead of the Citizens’ clash with Basel.

CL return

The two sides are set to go head to head in the first-leg of their Champions League last-16 tie tomorrow night at St. Jakob-Park, with City having had a number of injury concerns ahead of the release of their travelling squad earlier today.

All of Leroy Sane, David Silva, Fabian Delph and Aymeric Laporte were viewed as doubts do to be named in the 20-man panel of the Premier League leaders, though an official announcement has since seen all 4 included.

The possible absence of Laporte came out of the blue this morning, when it was confirmed that City’s big-money January signing had missed training with the rest of the Sky Blues’ squad.

However, as confirmed by reliable journalist Jose Alvarez Haya this evening, Laporte’s absence this morning was due to illness rather than injury, with the Spanish stopper set to be available for selection from the start tomorrow night:

Basel vs Manchester City Preview

Basel host Manchester City in the Champions League round of 16 this week and the Premier League giants will be looking to secure a big win in the first leg.

The hosts cannot be underestimated despite their lack of quality. They managed to beat Manchester United 1-0 at home in December in the group stages.

Also, Manchester City have been quite unpredictable on the road in the recent weeks. They have only won two of their last five in all competitions and this could be a tricky outing for them.

Basel vs Manchester City Team News

Luca Zuffi is a doubt for the home side and Germano Vailati is sidelined.

Benjamin Mendy, Gabriel Jesus and Fabian Delph are still sidelined for City.

Predicted Basel Starting Lineup (4-2-3-1): Vaclik; Lang, Suchy, Balanta, Petretta; Die, Xhaka; Bua, Elyounoussi, Stocker; Oberlin

Predicted Manchester City Starting Lineup (4-3-3): Ederson; Walker, Stones, Kompany, Laporte; Fernandinho, Gundogan, De Bruyne; Sterling, Aguero, Silva

Basel vs Manchester City Betting Tips

Manchester City are unbeaten in their last six matches in all competitions. Bet on the away side to win or draw.

Manchester City have scored 17 goals in their last six matches in all competitions. Over 2.5 goals seem likely.

Basel vs Manchester City Prediction

Manchester City are firm favourites to win on current form.

Basel are heading into this game on the back of a home defeat. Also, they are severely out of their depth against a team as good as City.

An away win seems certain here.

Mourinho target prefers Man City, Man Utd ready to make him their highest earner

Mourinho target prefers Man City, Man Utd ready to make him their highest earner – originally posted on Sportslens.com

Real Madrid midfielder Isco has been linked with a move away from the club in the recent weeks.

Apparently, Zinedine Zidane is prepared to sell the player at the end of this season following a series of underwhelming performances.

The Spaniard has been left out of the squad a few times already this season and he might have to switch clubs in order to play more often.

As per the reports, Manchester City and Manchester United are keeping tabs on the player.

Jose Mourinho wants to add more creativity to his side and is ready to pay big money for the Real Madrid playmaker.

Don Balon adds that Mourinho is prepared to shell out 150 million Euros for the Real Madrid midfielder. Apparently, Mourinho is ready to make him the highest paid player in the squad along with Paul Pogba.

However, there is a feeling that Isco prefers to join Manchester City because of Pep’s style of football. Considering David Silva’s age, Isco could be a very good addition to the City squad. He could be the long-term replacement for the Manchester City legend.

Similarly, he would be a terrific addition to the United side as well. It will be interesting to see where he ends up at the end of this season.

Five Things: Arsenal boss in denial, Man City striker the star of the show, Newcastle dig in for big win

Five Things: Arsenal boss in denial, Man City striker the star of the show, Newcastle dig in for big win – originally posted on Sportslens.com

It was another fun-packed weekend in the Premier League, with plenty of areas for discussion at both ends of the table.

Manchester City’s victory over Leicester City left them eleventy million points clear at the top of the standings and they could have things wrapped up by the end of March.

Sportslens takes a look at five talking points from over the weekend.

Wenger in denial about his defence

Arsene Wenger hit back at Martin Keown’s criticism of Arsenal’s defence after Saturday’s derby defeat, but the club’s former centre-back was spot on with his assessment.

Harry Kane was given a free header for the winning goal, but the Spurs striker could easily have had a hat-trick against the Gunners’ flaky backline.

Arsenal look dangerous going forward, but they are still an accident waiting to happen at the back. The first step in solving a problem is recognising there is one. Wenger’s continued denials are a joke.

Hernandez proving his worth with West Ham

Javier Hernandez’s goal against Watford on Saturday was his third in his last four games for West Ham and he’s beginning to show his true form for the club.

Hernandez struggled to hit it off with Andy Carroll, but he is thriving with the big striker out injured once again.

The Mexican looked to be on his way out of the club during January, but in this sort of form West Ham would be silly to let him go.

Aguero the star of the show

Kevin De Bruyne has picked up many of the plaudits for Manchester City this season, but Sergio Aguero demonstrated his own value to the team against Leicester City on Saturday.

City were off the pace in the first half, but Aguero’s four-goal haul after the break perfectly showcased his finishing ability.

His fourth was a touch of magic, taking a pass 25 yards from goal and unleashing a spectacular shot that rattled the upright and went straight in. Simply breathtaking.

Benitez can keep Newcastle up

It’s been a frustrating season for Newcastle United fans, especially with the ongoing uncertainty over whether owner Mike Ashley will ever sell the club.

Manager Rafa Benitez has made no secret of his frustration over what he believes to be a lack of investment in the squad, but Sunday’s 1-0 victory over Manchester United certainly boosted their hopes of avoiding relegation.

The Red Devils created enough chances to win the game, but Newcastle were competitive throughout and this result could be crucial in their fight for survival.

Aldridge off target with striker comments

There’s a few questionable pundits around the Premier League at the moment and John Aldridge is pretty high up the list.

Aldridge claimed Liverpool’s potential title challenge this season has been hampered by the lack of a recognised striker, but one thing you can’t accuse the Reds of is a shortage of firepower.

Robert Firmino and Mohamed Salah have both broken through the 20-goal barrier in all competitions and the former Liverpool striker’s views are laughable.

Unresolved defensive issues remain Liverpool’s biggest problem, while a creative midfielder also wouldn’t go amiss. Scoring enough goals is the least of their worries.

Aldridge was a superb finisher during his playing career. Punditry? Lousy.

Manchester City handed injury boost ahead of Basel tie

Premier League leaders Manchester City are ‘likely’ to have winger Leroy Sane available for their Champions League matchup with Basel on Tuesday night.

Blistering wide-man Sane has been on the sidelines since picking up an ankle injury during City’s FA Cup 4th round victory over Cardiff two weeks ago, following a horror challenge from Blubirds’ defender Joe Bennett:

Pep Guardiola revealed in his post-match press conference following the clash that Sane looked set to be sidelined for ‘a while, a few weeks or months’, with City later confirming that the former Schalke star suffered ligament damage to his ankle.

Guardiola went on to put a timetable on Sane’s return in the days that followed, with the former Barcelona boss having estimated ‘six or seven weeks out’ for the 22-year-old.

Ahead of schedule

However, over the last couple of days, a surprising update on Sane’s condition has revealed that the winger has incredibly already returned to light training.

Guardiola confirmed as much over the weekend, but also revealed that ‘I don’t think he will be back for the Champions League’ (vs Basel).

‘Most likely’ scenario

But, in yet another update coming courtesy of reliable journalist Jose Alvarez Haya this evening, signs now point towards Sane being included in the Citizens’ squad set to travel to Switzerland tomorrow:

How Man City could make PL title win even more heartbreaking for Man United

An amazing fact regarding the Premier League title race has come to the fore following Manchester United’s loss to Newcastle this afternoon.

The two sides went head to head at St. James’ Park, with Jose Mourinho’s visitors having put their disappointing loss to Tottenham last week behind them with a 2-0 win over Huddersfield last time out.

Newcastle, meanwhile, had slipped into the Premier League relegation zone ahead of today’s kick-off, with the Magpies having picked up draws in their last two outings with Burnley and Crystal Palace respectively.

The visiting Red Devils understandably headed into this afternoon’s clash as heavy favourites, and took control of the majority of possession from the off.

However, Newcastle made it clear from early on that they would not allow the aura of their opponents to intimidate them, with Rafael Benitez’s men working like dogs when out of possession and making every tackle count.

And, after holding United at bay for the opening 45 minutes, Newcastle were rewarded for their valiant efforts shortly after the hour mark, when Chris Smalling’s ridiculous dive near the halfway-line saw the hosts awarded a free-kick.

The ball was subsequently lofted in towards the edge of Man United’s area, before a flicked header landed at the feet of Dwight Gayle.

From here, Gayle proceeded to expertly lay the ball off into the space behind him, where Matt Ritchie arrived in perfect time to slam home a quality finish into the bottom-left corner of David De Gea’s goal.

Alexis Sanchez and Anthony Martial were both guilty of fluffing guilt-edged chances for the visitors on ‘one of those days’ for United, with Newcastle in the end holding on for a potentially-crucial 3 points.

Derby day decider?

The result leaves Manchester United a massive 16 points adrift of fierce rivals and runaway Premier League leaders Manchester City, meaning, if results play out in a particular way over the coming weeks, that the Citizens could clinch the English top-flight title on a rather special occasion:

Man City highlight Roman Abramovich’s Chelsea financial problems

Roman Abramovich & Chelsea

Chelsea are back in action on Monday night in the Premier League.

After losing 4-1 to Watford last weekend, is anyone confident that Chelsea will beat West Brom at Stamford Bridge?

Ahead of the game, the Sunday Times have looked into Roman Abramovich and Chelsea’s spending patterns in recent season.

Despite the Russian plowing in a billion pounds into Chelsea since he arrived at the club, the case is made that Abramovich and Chelsea now have problem.

Behind Man City, Man United

When it comes to spending these days, Chelsea are behind Manchesters City and United.

Those numbers are detailed and fleshed out in the Sunday Times as follows:

In these past six years (Man) City have flourished thanks to Abu Dhabi and the traditional powers exploiting their commercial potential.

(Man) United’s turnover since 2012 has increased by 71%, City’s 85%, Arsenal’s 68%, Liverpool’s 82%, Tottenham’s 100%. Chelsea’s (despite winning more than the rest) is up 33%.

You see it in transfers. Post-Hazard, City and United have bought 11 players, combined, for £40m or more and Chelsea two.

Over the past four seasons Chelsea earned £224m compared with £32m at Manchester United, £45m at Arsenal and £69m at Manchester City.

Will Marcos Alonso play vs West Brom?

Many Chelsea and FPL managers are sweating over Marcos Alonso before the West Brom match.

One of the big shocks for Chelsea at Watford was the complete absence of Marcos Alonso from Antonio Conte’s XI.

Alonso has been an ever present for Chelsea this term. And fans were given no indication in the build up to the Watford game that Alonso was a doubt.

On Monday night, reports claimed that the Spanish wing-back was left out the squad as a precautionary measure.

Alonso missed Watford with a minor hamstring issue. So will that keep him out vs the Baggies?

Conte has stayed tight-lipped about his left wing-back. The official line is that Alonso will be a late decision.

Yet, when the Times and the Guardian both predicted Chelsea’s line-up for Monday night, Alonso was in their teams.

There’s a split of opinion on how Chelsea will line up in attack.

Alvaro Morata is again missing, so it’s either going to be Olivier Giroud leading the line or Eden Hazard in a false nine role.
