Why Laporte missed Man City training ahead of Basel

The reason behind Aymeric Laporte’s absence from Manchester City training earlier today has been revealed this evening, ahead of the Citizens’ clash with Basel.

CL return

The two sides are set to go head to head in the first-leg of their Champions League last-16 tie tomorrow night at St. Jakob-Park, with City having had a number of injury concerns ahead of the release of their travelling squad earlier today.

All of Leroy Sane, David Silva, Fabian Delph and Aymeric Laporte were viewed as doubts do to be named in the 20-man panel of the Premier League leaders, though an official announcement has since seen all 4 included.

The possible absence of Laporte came out of the blue this morning, when it was confirmed that City’s big-money January signing had missed training with the rest of the Sky Blues’ squad.

However, as confirmed by reliable journalist Jose Alvarez Haya this evening, Laporte’s absence this morning was due to illness rather than injury, with the Spanish stopper set to be available for selection from the start tomorrow night:

Figure Skater Adam Rippon Jokes About His Teeth Bleaching Ahead of Olympic Debut

When figure skater Adam Rippon competes in his first Winter Olympics on Monday in South Korea, the smile he flashes may look a little shinier than normal — with good reason.

“I’ve been bleaching my teeth for the past few days and now the wind that I create from just talking makes them hurt,” he tweeted on Sunday. “Like, I think this is a sign that I’m officially ready for my Olympic debut.”

Rippon, 28, is the first openly gay athlete to qualify for Team USA in a Winter Games. He is also something of a noted Twitter aficionado, mixing on his timeline jokes, gratitude, shade and shout-outs to the celebrities for whom he has become a breakout star.

Sharing a recent piece about him in GQhe wrote of one of the photos accompanying the article: “I’m sitting in a Kohl’s parking lot bush. With the lights from the Taco Bell next door twinkling in my eye, Ryan Pfluger has never made me feel more beautiful.”

In an interview with the magazine, he said, “I’m proud of a lot of things I’ve said on Twitter.”

Rippon, a former national champion, will compete in the men’s free skate during the figure skating team competition Monday. Joining him from Team USA will be Mirai Nagasu and ice dancing siblings Alex and Maia Shibutani.

While he was briefly involved in a dispute with Vice President Mike Pence, Rippon has said in recent days he is focused on competing, and he appears to be soaking up the pageantry and goodwill of the Games.

Walking during the opening ceremony, he shared a photo with freestyle skier Gus Kenworthy, another openly gay athlete. (Kenworthy previously told PEOPLE he and Rippon were “excited to hang out and kiki in Korea.”)

Not long after the Olympics opened, Rippon wrote — on Twitter, of course — that “tonight I walked in the #OpeningCeremony and got to watch my old friend @Yunaaaa light the Olympic flame.”

“Representing the USA is one of the greatest honors of my life,” he continued, “and being able to do it as my authentic self makes it all so much sweeter.”

Manchester City handed injury boost ahead of Basel tie

Premier League leaders Manchester City are ‘likely’ to have winger Leroy Sane available for their Champions League matchup with Basel on Tuesday night.

Blistering wide-man Sane has been on the sidelines since picking up an ankle injury during City’s FA Cup 4th round victory over Cardiff two weeks ago, following a horror challenge from Blubirds’ defender Joe Bennett:

Pep Guardiola revealed in his post-match press conference following the clash that Sane looked set to be sidelined for ‘a while, a few weeks or months’, with City later confirming that the former Schalke star suffered ligament damage to his ankle.

Guardiola went on to put a timetable on Sane’s return in the days that followed, with the former Barcelona boss having estimated ‘six or seven weeks out’ for the 22-year-old.

Ahead of schedule

However, over the last couple of days, a surprising update on Sane’s condition has revealed that the winger has incredibly already returned to light training.

Guardiola confirmed as much over the weekend, but also revealed that ‘I don’t think he will be back for the Champions League’ (vs Basel).

‘Most likely’ scenario

But, in yet another update coming courtesy of reliable journalist Jose Alvarez Haya this evening, signs now point towards Sane being included in the Citizens’ squad set to travel to Switzerland tomorrow:

Everton boss Allardyce told it’s ‘too late’ by Roy Hodgson ahead of Palace clash

Sam Allardyce has been told it’s far too late to offer any apology for mocking Roy Hodgson when he was caught in a sting on camera as England boss.

He mocked Hodgson’s speech impediment and called him ‘Woy’, something that many considered to be seriously distasteful at the time – and something that Hodgson expected an apology over.

However, since he’s never been offered one, the Crystal Palace boss claims it’s now too late, and that his relationship with Allardyce isn’t great, ahead of Everton’s meeting with his side.

Hodgson said: “Do you like being insulted? No, not particularly. Did it bother me? I didn’t lose any sleep over it.

“My relationship with him before, I always thought was good. Now I would expect it to be less good.

“Would I like him to apologise? No. It’s far too late. It has gone. It belongs to the distant past.

“In jobs like I am doing at the moment when you are the manager of a Premier League club, you live very much in the ultimate present and the future.

“I’m not interested. I’ve said what I’ve got to say.”

Given how tight it is at the bottom of the table, the one thing all sides need to do is pick up points – especially from the teams around them, and while Everton are in better shape than they were pre-Allardyce, their shocking performance against Arsenal will certainly have knocked their confidence.

Not only that, but it seems that Allardyce may consider a change in players, and Hodgson will know they are there for the taking if he sets his team up right.

Of course, it was a huge blow to Palace to see Zaha added to the injury list that already includes Bakary Sako, Jeffrey Schlupp, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Martin Kelly, Scott Dann, Jason Puncheon, Connor Wickham and Julian Speroni – especially since they’ve not won a league game without him since September 2016.

Max Allegri provides fitness updates on Juventus stars ahead of Tottenham

Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri this morning provided updates on the fitness of a number of his side’s players, ahead of their trip to Fiorentina tomorrow evening, and subsequent clash with Tottenham Hotspur next week.

The return of the Champions League in 5 days’ time will see some mouthwatering fixtures played out, with Juventus welcoming Tottenham to Turin towards the top of the list.

Mauricio Pochettino’s Spurs looked extremely impressive on their way to topping a group that featured both Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund late last year, while Juventus, Champions League finalists in 2 of the last 3 seasons, finished runners-up to runaway La Liga leaders Barcelona.

While the Bianconeri often looked short of their best during the first-half of the campaign, the form of Max Allegri’s men has begun to pick up over recent weeks, with Juve having not lost a fixture since a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Sampdoria in the middle of November.

Making this run even more impressive is the fact that the Serie A champions have conceded just one goal over the course of their last 15 matches across all competitions (including games with Barcelona and Napoli, and a 7-0 hammering of Sassuolo at the weekend).

Speaking in a press conference ahead of his side’s crunch Serie A matchup with fierce rivals Fiorentina tomorrow night, Bianconeri boss Max Allegri was drawn on the fitness of several of the club’s stars:

‘[Juan] Cuadrado is still out but we all knew that would be the case, Dybala, [Benedikt] Howedes and Matuidi are out then the others are available.’

There was more positive news for fans of the Old Lady regarding electric winger Douglas Costa, though, with Allegri revealing:

‘Douglas is fine, but I don’t think he’ll play from the beginning because [Federico] Bernardeschi is fine and it’s only right that Bernardeschi plays in an important match like tomorrow.’
