Simple Guide to Take Care of Your Fish Tank Aquariums

Holly Clancy, January 21, 2023January 21, 2023

So you just bought a spanking new aquarium tank equipped with the necessary gadgets. You read all the important information and now you know the crucial uses of those fish aquarium supplies, fish tank filters, oxygen pump and the like. How would you care for that aquarium tank to make it crystal clear and keep your fishes dancing happily?

Taking care of your aquarium tank needs your daily attention. Feeding time is the ideal time to observe their behavior. You have to remove any dead or ill fish from the tank immediately.

The temperature should always be checked and should always be constant. Some fish tank aquariums have built in thermometers. The optimum temperature for tropical fish in a freshwater tank is 77 degrees Fahrenheit. A temperature higher than this can cause algae problem that manifest as greenish tanks. Relocate the tank if the high temperature is due to direct sunlight in another place and away from air conditioning vents.

Here are some more tips for long care maintenance:

  1. Create a regular fish tank aquarium care and maintenance schedule. Say, every Sunday at 10 A.M., print in hard board and put it where it can always remind you. Maintenance and care is best if done weekly.
  2. Assemble your fish tank cleaning supplies and place it in one piece in a place near the aquarium and everything related to the chore. You might need an aquarium scrubber, a 5 gallon bucket, an aquarium vacuum or python vacuum system and a pair of long latex gloves for you.
  3. Put off the electricity and unplug the cord to make it safe. This will prevent the fish tank filter from clogging as a result of the debris you pull out of the sides of the fish tank aquarium.
  4. Using your aquarium scraper scrape the sides of the aquarium gently to remove algae that has accumulated. Do it gently so as not to scrape the acrylic if your fish tank aquarium is made of acrylic.
  5. Check if the aquarium filter media or filter floss needs rinsing. Rinse it with the discarded tank water not with chlorinated tap water. It contains helpful bacteria for the aquarium fish tank’s nitrogen cycle which helps in maintaining the necessary nutrients for your tropical aquarium fish.
  6. Refill the fish tank aquarium. As much as possible, the water should have the same temperature as that of the aquarium water. Test the water and refill the needed chemicals necessary for balance in the tank.
  7. Tropical fish tanks should be filled with salt water. Use pre-mixed saltwater for this kind of fish aquarium tank. However, you have to mix the salt water at least a day earlier before you pour it in. Newly mixed salt water may be too saline due to unequal mixing of the salt and water or incomplete salt dissolution. Too salty water is lethal to your tropical fishes. If your tap water contains chlorine or chloramines, dechlorinate it first using a dechlorinating agent available in pet shops. Check the salinity of the mixed saltwater using a refractometer. The optimum specific gravity reading is from 1.021 to 1.024.

If you have problems with maintenance always contact your pet shop for useful advice. Taking care of your aquarium and your fishes will bring delight especially if you see how sparkling and attractive your fish tank aquarium has become and how you have kept your multi-colored neon fishes swimming merrily.
