Former Liverpool player Steve Nicol believes that Monaco’s Fabinho is set to make the move to Manchester United and has backed the club’s interest in him.
The Brazilian has been quite public with his intentions on leaving the French side and it seems that this summer will certainly see him complete a transfer elsewhere.
Whether it’s to United or not is yet to be seen but there has been rumours of Jose Mourinho’s in the versatile midfielder and he would definitely make a quality addition.
The Portuguese manager has also publicly stated his transfer targets for the next transfer window, insisting that investment is needed in the Red Devils’ midfield.
Nicol though has stated his belief that Fabinho will join Mourinho’s men and has explained why the transfer makes perfect sense for both parties.
According to the Express, Steve said to ESPN: “I think they do (lose another player) and I think they will. Monaco have shown that they’re not going to hold onto their best players, they’ll happily take the money. I think that’s exactly what they will do.
“They must (need the money) because the talent they’ve let go over the last couple of seasons has been incredible. This guy will go as well and I think he will go to Manchester United.
“I think it would be a great move for Man United. If you can get him and Matic together in the middle that will free up Pogba, then this would really make sense. I think this absolutely is a hit.”
Manchester United’s current midfield options are Michael Carrick, Marouane Fellaini, Ander Herrera, Scott McTominay, Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba.
Jose seems to prefer a two man midfield working as a pivot despite the club’s and in particular Pogba’s success in a three man midfield.
Either way the lack of depth is pretty concerning with Carrick set to retire at the end of the season and join the club’s backroom staff.
Whilst McTominay has been solid if unspectacular, he’s still got a long way to become a regular for the team and United will need better depth.
Fellaini’s contract situation continues to be a stalemate and Herrera has yet to hit the highs of last season’s impressive campaign.
