Manchester United star Ander Herrera has insisted that he’s innocent of the match-fixing claims over the ‘suspect’ match between his former club Zaragoza and Levante in 2011.
Seven years later the topic is still ongoing as most of the players on both team and some staff face a trial that will soon conclude the matter.
The Spaniard moved to United back in 2014 under Louis Van Gaal‘s management and has had a decent career since joining the club.
Herrera’s managed to win the FA Cup, Carabao Cup, Europa League and Community Shield during his time at Old Trafford and appears determined to remain at the club for as long as possible.
The former Atletico Bilbao man though could quickly find his career come to an end should there be any truth in the claims against him.
According to the Mirror, Ander said: “As I stated back in 2014 when this issue was raised, I have never had and will never have anything to do with manipulating match results.
“If I am ever called to testify in a judicial hearing, I will be delighted to attend as my conscience is totally clear. I love football and I believe in fair play, both on and off the pitch.”
In terms of how he’s performed on the pitch, Ander Herrera couldn’t have enjoyed a better season than the one he experienced under Jose Mourinho’s management last season.
Named the club’s player of the year, the midfielder has unfortunately fallen short this campaign of the high standards he previously set.
The hope is that he can regain some of that form once more, especially given that his contract ends in the summer of 2019.
His contract originally ended in 2018 but it was extended by a year with skeptics claiming Mourinho only did it so that he wouldn’t lose the player for free.
Whether there’s any truth to that rumour will be seen later on but Herrera should definitely watch over his shoulders with the amount of midfielders the Red Devils have been linked to.
