Your New Chihuahua Puppy – What You Need to Know
The adorable little handbag-sized Chihuahua is becoming more common in Australia. Perhaps it is the less space we have now that makes these compact little dogs so popular, or maybe it is as simple as Paris Hilton has one, and they are incredibly sweet. But whatever route you have taken to get to your choice there are some important things to know about your newest family member.
While adorable and cute, the Chihuahua is one of the more aggressive dog breeds, which means it is essential they be well trained. In addition to their aggression, they can also be very stubborn, which means that training will be no walk in the park.
About Your Chihuahua
The temperament of a Chihuahua and their feisty bursts of aggression can be very cute in such a little dog, but it can also get them into a lot of trouble. If not trained properly your puppy may find themselves in a position of danger which they are unaware how to remove themselves from.
The Chihuahua likes to protect its owner and can become very attached to you, especially if you do carry your pup around in your bag. The issue with this is that they can see potential threats where there are none, including with other people, children and other dogs. It is therefore essential that your puppy becomes well socialised with many people and animals, so that he or she knows they are okay.
If you start training school with your puppy, be sure to keep up ongoing play dates with the other puppies as a way to ensure that socialisation continues as your pup grows.
Early Training
Enrolling your new Chihuahua into early training is key to your puppy learning the skills he or she needs to know to stay safe. While it might seem adorable to watch your little dog bare their teeth and snarl at a Mastiff, if for some reason either dog became loose you might find your dog and yourself in a very dangerous situation. For this reason obedience training is essential as is plenty of patience and consistency.
In addition to the formal puppy training, it will be necessary for you to conduct your own “house” training school and key to this training is developing a clear understanding that you are the alpha leader in this pack.
Going Out – Don’t play or cuddle your Chihuahua before you go out, otherwise they will learn that this is a signal that you are about to leave them and may develop separation anxiety. Similarly when you return wait for your Chihuahua to recover from their excitement before paying him or her too much attention.
Feeding – Set a routine for feeding and stick to it. Do not be swayed to feed your puppy when he or she demands it.
Furniture – From the first day your puppy comes home, set the boundaries. If you do not want your Chihuahua on the table, never allow it. The key to good boundaries is to ensure they do not waiver. Your puppy will quickly learn where he or she is allowed to go.
Walking – Take your Chihuahua for at least two walks a day. Those little feet may look like they don’t need exercise, but ensuring your dog is using all his energy on walks will help him relax more at home. Do not allow your dog to tug or pull, but control the walk so he or she knows that you are also in charge outside of the home.
Wearing Your Chihuahua Out
It is very important for this little breed of dog that you fully stimulate him or her each and every day both mentally and physically.
For mental stimulation, teach your Chihuahua the basic commands and ensure you do them each day. You can also teach them other little games like “find” where you hide a toy in one of four or five locations. Use the same locations so your dog has some idea where to look and doesn’t tear up the house.
Physical stimulation can be in the form of your two daily walks, but do not limit it to this, play fetch with your pup and perhaps set up a simple obstacle course in the backyard.
Don’t forget to ensure that you include regular social activities with your puppy as well.
