Manchester United target and Napoli midfielder’s agent Joao Santos has confirmed that a decision would be made over his future in the summer.
Jose Mourinho is keen to add to his midfield reinforcements ahead of Michael Carrick‘s retirement and Marouane Fellaini‘s potential departure in the summer.
The club has expressed interest in the Brazilian midfielder in response to his pivotal role in guiding Napoli to the top of Serie A.
And Santos, speaking earlier this week, made it clear that no decisions over his future would be made until the season ends.
“From June he’ll have two years on his contract and maybe we’ll start discussing it then, it’s pointless messing with his head,” he said.
“The contract isn’t expiring any time soon, there’s time. He’s happy in Naples, Jorginho is happy and the city is very beautiful.
“Manchester United and Manchester City? When you’re playing for the Serie A leaders it’s only logical that important teams will ask for updates: for example on the length of the contract. I’m glad to come here [to Naples] too, it’s a very Brazilian climate. In Manchester it rains too often!”
Mourinho seemingly has a litany of midfield targets to choose from, with Jean Michael Seri, Julian Weigl, Arturo Vidal, Fred and Mateo Kovacic among the other potential signings ahead of the summer transfer window.
And you sense Jorginho, a specialist in maintaining balance at the base of midfield whilst simultaneously moving play forward quickly, would be one of the more logical replacements for Carrick, but prizing him away from Naples and manager Maurizio Sarri may prove difficult.
Will Mourinho take the risk of waiting for the perfect but harder to secure midfielder, or will he find someone who would jump at joining United in a heartbeat instead?
