Hit back
Former West Ham striker Andre Ayew has hit back at the former Hammers employee who advised not to sign African players because they caused ‘mayhem’.
That employee was West Ham director of recruitment Tony Henry and his emails were leaked around a month ago.
The director claimed that they no longer wanted to sign African players because ‘they have a bad attitude’ and ’cause mayhem’ when not selected.
This rightly caused a huge stir at the club, who fired Henry only a couple of days after the emails had been leaked.
Though, that didn’t stop several players hitting back at the claims.
Cheikhou Kouyate posted ‘African and proud’ on his Instagram page which was liked by several West Ham stars including Ayew.
Now, the new Swansea striker has been speaking about being African in the Premier League.
‘Maybe an African player can be difficult, but maybe a French or English player can be difficult too,’ Ayew explained in a press conference today.
‘But maybe an African player can be calm too, so it’s not possible to say everyone is the same.
‘I just know that we African players are proud of ourselves, we know where we have come from, and we believe in our football.
‘African players – like Didier Drogba – have played at the greatest clubs in the world and done their jobs.
‘We have done a lot to get into professional football and African footballers now play for Barcelona, Real Madrid and Chelsea.
‘It’s an honour to be an African. I am so proud and so happy and I wouldn’t change it for anything.’
Tony Henry makes pop about African players.
Senegalese midfielder Cheikhou Kouyate puts Instagram post about being proud of his African descent.
West Ham close in on signing of Senegalese born Patrice Evra.
Something tells me it’s not quite Evra’s playing ability we want
