PAOK player celebrates goal with his son after he was bullied in school

Fernando Varela

PAOK beat Larissa 3-0 on Monday evening.

PAOK’s second goal was scored by former Steaua Bucharest defender, Fernando Varela.

The 30 year old headed home from Dimitros Pelkas’ corner in the 40th minute of the match. He then proceeded to run off the pitch and celebrate with his son who had been suffering from bullying at school.

Why was he bullied?

Varela’s son was taunted by his class mates due to his father’s own goal which came in a match last season against Olympiacos.

Varela had actually scored his first goal for PAOK earlier in the match but scored a disastrous own goal in the 25th minute. Olympiacos went on to win the game 2-1 with Crystal Palace’s Luka Milivojevic scoring a late late winner deep into added time.

The tweet above reads:

PAOK defender Fernando Varela, forgave himself by celebrating his goal with his son.

Varela’s son was ill-treated by his father because his father scored his own goal in the Olympiacos match at the beginning of the season.

Best celebration ever?

Varela’s celebration surely ranks up there with the best celebrations of all time.

Last season, Lionel Messi celebrated with a nice gesture (pictured below). The Argentinian was making a symbol to raise awareness for children suffering with cancer.

Why this Chelsea player was lauded for involvement in opener vs West Brom

On a night where it is win or bust for Antonio Conte at Chelsea, his side lead West Bromwich Albion at half-time courtesy of Eden Hazard.

The Blues broke the deadlock after 25 minutes, with some wonderfully worked, intricate play resulting in the Belgian slotting home his tenth goal of the season.

However, it was Olivier Giroud who got the plaudits for his involvement in the goal, as he produced a fine bit of link up play to help put Chelsea ahead.

Chelsea’s goal

Giroud demonstrated exactly why Conte was so desperate to add a player of his ilk, as he produced an excellent piece of hold-up play to set-up Hazard.

The 27-year-old spun off the Baggies’ back-line, charging into the penalty area before combing with the Frenchman to lash the ball home from just a few yards out.

This season, Chelsea have struggled to find a settled number 9, with both Alvaro Morata and Michy Batshuayi failing to make an impact at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea supporters will be hoping that Giroud can provide that much-needed spark in attack as they look to secure a spot in this season’s top four.

Tottenham player reveals transfer desire, says he would love to play for this club

Tottenham forward Fernando Llorente has revealed that he misses playing for Juventus and that he would love to return to Turin.

The Spaniard has struggled to hold down a first team place at Spurs and he was linked with a move to Chelsea in January. However, the Blues opted to sign Olivier Giroud instead.

Meanwhile, Llorente’s comments will certainly fuel speculations surrounding his future at the London club now.

The former Juventus striker said that the Bianconeri are a big family and he misses the atmosphere at the Italian club. Llorente also revealed how emotional he was when he had to leave the club.

He said: “Juve is a difficult place to leave. I left the Vinovo training ground crying. It’s also true what David Trezeguet said: ‘It’s only when you leave Juventus that you realise what you had’. I miss it like crazy and would love to return. It’s a special club because, despite being an enormous club, it’s like a family inside. There is a fine image of Juventus here and I raise it even more: I always speak very highly of the Bianconeri and give them a good rep.”

Considering the fact that Llorente has failed to make a positive impact at Spurs, his departure is unlikely to make any difference to Pochettino’s side. The Londoners could use a younger and more mobile back up forward anyway.

It will be interesting to see whether the Spaniard decides to move on in the summer. Juventus already have Dybala and Higuain at their disposal and therefore a return to Turin seems unlikely at this stage.

Blow for Man United: Key player injured after Newcastle loss

Injured

Manchester United could well be handed a double blow on the same day they lost to Newcastle United, and now it seems that they could well be facing time without Paul Pogba.

There were injury concerns for the midfielder before the game after he pulled up in the warm up and it seemed he could miss the match, but after playing and then looking poor and out of sorts, then being taken off by Jose Mourinho everyone wondered what was going on.

Then, reports came out that the player was limping through the mixed zone – yet stopped to speak with the waiting kids regardless, showing some class from the under fire Frenchman.

Champions League

United fans know that there are some key games coming up for them – with Chelsea to face in a battle that is not only a showdown between Mourinho and Conte but also one that will see the winner take three points from a rival for a spot in the top four – something both sides will be desperate to do.

The fight for a Champions League place is tighter than ever, and four teams are trying to squeeze into three spots after Manchester City in first place – meaning they know every win is vital – and after the revival from Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool and a fall off from Chelsea and inconsistency from Man United, the question of who will miss out is still a key one no one can answer.

Not only that, but the Champions League itself returns soon, with the knockout stages coming up and United will want Paul Pogba fit and ready to play in that, even if he is struggling in the new role Mourinho is expecting him to play in.

Jose Mourinho blames one player for Newcastle winner vs Man United

Pogba

Jose Mourinho has hit out at Paul Pogba in an interview after Manchester United’s latest loss.

The Red Devils lost to Newcastle by a one goal margin, and the United boss aimed the dig at Pogba without naming him, noting that one player – Pogba – lost the challenge in the air, and then the goal happened.

“We train, we work, we organise… and the players have their individual jobs when they defend zonal.

“The players they know there are responsibilities but I am pretty sure you already watch that goal on TV a few times, I didn’t.

“So you know more than me and you know who lost the challenge in the air, you know clearly that so I think it is bad if you put me in a position where I have to criticise a player.

“By yourself you make your own analysis.”

Pogba had a poor game and was once again taken off – and even appeared to be limping through the mixed zone following the game, sparking fears the player could well be injured and that he may miss the upcoming games.

Smalling

The one player who many decided was at fault however was Chris Smalling, who had a terrible game – and it was said defender who Mourinho actually defended following the game, and made it clear he thinks defenders have to give away fouls at some point – and it seems that the main annoyance for the United boss was actually that the side managed to lose balls in the air – something they simply don’t expect and something the manager will not accept.

He added: “A defender has to concede free-kicks now and again.

“It was an intuitive thing. Players [who do it] in the box deserve a card more than [Chris] Smalling in that situation. ‘Clearly I know we lost the duel in the air and it’s difficult to accept that.”

Player Ratings: United punished by Newcastle, Smalling slated for shocking performance

David de Gea 6 – Made a strong save from Jonjo Shelvey’s powerful drive during the early stages but found himself stranded by his defence for Newcastle’s goal.

Antonio Valencia 6 – Composed himself well defensively, untroubled by the pace of the game, but lacked influence in the final third.

Chris Smalling 4 – Could have easily conceded a penalty in the first half and his needless dive in the second led to Newcastle’s opener. Another fraught, disjointed display.

Phil Jones 6 – Provided a strong physical presence, throwing himself in front of shots and harassing defenders all afternoon, only for his positional sense to wane in the second half and allow Dwight Gayle to set up a goal.

Ashley Young 6 – Frustrated with some loose balls and sloppy crosses in the first half but improved as an attacking presence as the game went on.

Nemanja Matic 6 – You sense that the Serbian, having played almost every Premier League game, could do with a rest. Moved the ball around sensibly but look sluggish at times, especially when Shelvey went forward.

Paul Pogba 4 – The Frenchman picked up a strain during the warm up and looked to be operating at 60% throughout the game, with his ambling nature allowing for the hosts to score from a set-piece. Shouldn’t have been on the pitch.

Jesse Lingard 5 – Sprung forward with intent at No.10 and always looked to link up with teammates, but failed to find the right final ball.

Anthony Martial 5 – Placed on the right to accommodate Sanchez, the 22-year-old, despite streaming forward confidently, never looked comfortable in front of goal. Could have easily claimed a hat-trick.

Alexis Sanchez 7 – An ebullient, tenacious attacking display from the Chilean. Posed an unpredictable and constant threat going forward, with his only shortcoming being his delay in pulling the trigger after rounding keeper Martin Dubravka.

Romeu Lukaku 7 – The Belgian’s performance deserved so much more: brilliantly held up the ball and released teammates on countless occasions.

£30m player says he would be 'very happy' to join Newcastle permanently in summer

£30m player says he would be ‘very happy’ to join Newcastle permanently in summer – originally posted on Sportslens.com

Leicester City striker Islam Slimani hopes to join Newcastle United on a permanent deal in the summer.

The Algerian joined the Magpies on loan in January and he is happy with life at Newcastle so far.

The 29-year-old striker believes that he has the trust of Rafa Benitez and that will help him rediscover his form in the Premier League.

When asked about a permanent move to Newcastle, the player said: “Yes, yes. I’m just on loan at the minute but if I could stay here I’d be very happy, so let’s see how it goes. My objective is to score goals, give my best and really fight for this team. The big difference is that he (Benitez) trusts me and when you have the trust of your coach, that’s very important. They trusted me at Leicester, it’s not that I wasn’t trusted, I started well but then I was dogged by bad health and injuries. He (Benitez) phoned me and we had a good chat. There was a good feeling between us and it’s important to get a like this, to know you’re wanted by a big coach like him. I wanted to leave Leicester, I needed a fresh start. Newcastle’s a big club and it’s a good choice for me. A lot of clubs of got in touch but I’m pretty sure I made the right choice.”

Leicester paid £30m for Slimani back in 2016 after a break-out season with Sporting. The forward failed to deliver in at the King Power Stadium and his decision to move is perhaps the best for all parties.

It will be interesting to see whether Newcastle break the bank for the player in the summer now. Leicester will be looking to recoup most of the money they invested in the player. Slimani is 29 and it might not be a wise investment for the Magpies. The player will have to perform really well for the remainder of this season to earn a permanent move to St James’ Park.

Video: Further proof that Alexis Sanchez is a proper Man United player

Alexis Sanchez has been videoed working hard in the gym on his own ahead of Manchester United’s trip to Newcastle United on Sunday.

The Chile international netted his first Man United goal since arriving in the January transfer window during the 2-0 win over Huddersfield Town last weekend.

Sources at Carrington have claimed that Sanchez has been staying behind for an extra half an hour to work on various aspects of his game every day.

And after training in the morning, Sanchez stayed behind to put in further hours in the gym.

I’ve been studying Sanchez closely since he joined, attempting to pick up an idea of what sort of person he is, what drives him.

His facial expression doesn’t give much away. He seems to be locked into a kind of ‘zone’ which prohibits his face from ever changing too much: rarely smiling, rarely frowning, occasionally letting out bursts of anger when things aren’t going his way.

The best way I can describe him, I think, is all-consuming. In every sense. He is less about specific goals but more the attitude he adopt to get them, which is always essentially full-throttle, ruthlessly driving forward, never resting, always wanting more.

And this is why he joined United and indeed why he is now the highest paid player in the world. His indefatigability impacts every aspect of his life, and has finally moved on from the Emirates – and I can only imagine he stayed there for as long as he did because of his undisputed alpha status – to scale bigger obstacles, and assert himself as one of the most menacing forwards in the Premier League.
