Celebrating the life my mom lived rather than the one we had hoped for her

When my mother, Lynn Eleveld, passed away this week at 78, little more than a handful of folks attended her modest funeral service in Grand Rapids, MI, the place of her birth. Mom's extended family had largely become the staff members at her group home who had given her excellent care for over a decade in the waning years of her life. It was a sweet little gathering but profoundly different from the bash we threw to mark my father's death just last year, complete with shrimp and prime rib, beer and wine, and some 500 of the many friends he had made along his journey.  To some, the lack of fanfare for my mother might seem sad, but to me the experience of her passing was equally as meaningful, even if in a different way. My mother lived with a debilitating mental illness most of her adult

An anguished mother focused her grief and anger at the White House after her 14-year-old daughter was among 17 people killed Wednesday in a Florida school shooting. “How do we allow a gunman to come into our children’s school?” Lori Alhadeff, the mother of soccer-loving Alyssa Alhadeff, said Thursday when given a microphone on CNN, the video of her comments shows. “The gunman, a crazy person, just walks right into the school, knocks down the window of my child’s door, and starts shooting — shooting her! And killing her!” “President Trump, you say what can you do? You can stop the guns from getting into these children’s hands,” she said, before stating that she’d just spent two hours planning for her daughter’s burial. “This is not fair to our families, that our children go to school and ha

The rapper, 28, appeared on the morning show Everyday Struggle on Wednesday, telling DJ Akademiks and Nadeska Alexis that there is “no bad blood” between the two after their split in April 2017. “Did Kylie really f— you up like that man?” DJ Akademiks asked him. “You just get older, you get me?” Tyga responded. “It was a relationship in front of the world, and that was it.” He continued, “She has her new life, I have my new life and that’s it. There’s no bad blood, no problems.” When asked if he still keeps in touch with Jenner — who gave birth to daughter Stormi (with new boyfriend Travis Scott, 25) earlier this month — Tyga admitted they “communicate here and there.” Jenner and Tyga had an on-again-o

A mother who experienced two miscarriages before having her second child used the materials from her in vitro fertilization journey to create a stunning photo of the baby she fought so hard to have. Lesleigh Cetinguc and her husband knew they wanted to have children as soon as they were married—but they soon discovered they were having problems getting pregnant. After seeking the help of a reproductive endocrinologist, the couple tried IVF treatment when IUI (intrauterine insemination) didn’t work. A short time after starting their IVF program, the couple’s wish came true: Lesleigh became pregnant with the couple’s first child, their boy, Lochlan. Lesleigh says the two frozen embryos left over from their treatment represented two more chances to bring another child into the world—and they
