Rose McGowan Pays Tribute to Former Manager After Suicide: 'This Bad Man Did This to Us Both'

Rose McGowan paid tribute to former manager Jill Messick on Instagram Saturday, three days after the 50-year-old died by suicide.

“May your family find some measure of solace during this pain,” McGowan, 44, wrote on Instagram, captioning a photo of the sun seen from space. “May you find peace on the astral plane. May you find serenity with the stars.”

After her death, Messick’s family criticized McGowan and Harvey Weinstein for involving Messick in McGowan’s allegations that Weinstein sexually assaulted her in 1997.

McGowan referenced Weinstein in her post for Messick, writing, “That one man could cause so much damage is astounding, but tragically true. The bad man did this to us both.”

According to her family, Messick, who was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and had been battling depression in the years before her death, was devastated after the movie mogul’s lawyer released an email in which Messick defended Weinstein.

“Jill was victimized by our new culture of unlimited information sharing and a willingness to accept statement as fact,” the family said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. “The speed of disseminating information has carried mistruths about Jill as a person, which she was unable and unwilling to challenge. She became collateral damage in an already horrific story.”

Her family also claimed McGowan made “inaccurate accusations and insinuations” against her, but Messick chose not to speak out so as not to take attention away from victims of sexual harassment and assault.

“She opted not to add to the feeding frenzy, allowing her name and her reputation to be sullied despite having done nothing wrong,” the family said. “She never chose to be a public figure; that choice was taken away from her.”

The family maintained McGowan confided in Messick after meeting with Weinstein at the Sundance Film Festival in 1997 — a meeting where McGowan alleges Weinstein assaulted her in a hot tub — and the manager immediately reported the incident to her bosses.

“Rose never once used the word rape in that conversation,” the family said. “Despite this, Jill recognized that Harvey had done something untoward to Rose, if not illegal. She immediately went to her bosses, the partners of Addis Wechsler, to recount Rose’s story and to insist that they immediately address the situation. They told Jill that they would handle the situation.”

When McGowan first opened up about her alleged experience with Weinstein to The New York Times in October, she said that she informed Messick about the alleged attack the day after. “She held me,” McGowan told the paper. “She put her arms around me.”

But McGowan said that in the months to come, she did not feel supported by her management team. She said that she was referred to a lawyer who specialized in harassment and assault cases and was given the impression that “filing a criminal charge was hopeless.”

Weinstein’s lawyer Ben Brafman responded to McGowan’s allegations in a statement to PEOPLE.

“Mr. Weinstein denies Rose McGowan’s allegations of non-consensual sexual contact and it is erroneous and irresponsible to conflate claims of inappropriate behavior and consensual sexual contact later regretted, with an untrue claim of rape.” His spokesperson also said that McGowan “chose to demand money” from Weinstein and worked and appeared with him later in her career.”

In October, the New York Times reported that McGowan was part of a settlement with Weinstein in 1997 following the alleged encounter. Messick’s family says the deal was negotiated without the manager’s knowledge.

“At that time, all Jill knew was that the matter was settled and that Rose continued making films with the Weinstein,” the family said. “She never knew any details until recently, when Rose elected to make them public.”

Ten months after the alleged incident, Messick was hired as an executive at Miramax Films, the studio then headed by Harvey Weinstein and his brother Bob, a position the family stresses she earned on merit alone. She worked for Miramax from 1997 to 2003.

On Jan. 30, Weinstein’s lawyers released an email in which Messick said McGowan had told her she got into the hot tub with Weinstein “consensually” but “regretted” it. Her family says the document was released without Messick’s consent.

“In this email, Jill offered the truth based on what she remembers Rose telling her about the Sundance account. In the face of Rose’s continued and embellished accusations last week, Harvey took it upon himself to release the email without her consent,” the family said.

In the statement, Messick’s family says, “Harvey’s desperate attempt to vindicate himself, was devastating for her. It broke Jill.”

West Ham look set to appoint a long term manager

When West Ham appointed David Moyes to replace Slaven Bilic, many questioned the decision.

Critics wondered what had Moyes done recently to earn a shot at the London Stadium.

Rather than looking like the fresh-faced manager who worked wonders at Everton, his recent records at Sociedad, Sunderland and Manchester United lingered in the memory.

Yet, Moyes has proven a wily appointment as West Ham’s relegation fears ease.

Nevertheless, Moyes was only given a contract until the end of the season, and it’s becoming clear that the Irons are gearing up for a longer term commitment.

David Sullivan on West Ham’s long term manager

In the past few days, West Ham owner David Sullivan has been signalling that David Moyes will get the job for the long term.

Sullivan has responded to reports that David Moyes may be tossed aside at the end of the season. He said:

What I like is, he [Moyes] is very hard-working. You see him at grounds watching games. He puts a long shift in at the training ground. The harder you work, the better the results.

He’s a good manager and will prove it. I hope he stays with us for many, many years and achieves things and wins things and achieve things.

So Moyes can count on a new contract, right?

It’s not like West Ham are known for breaking promises…

For once it was a relatively happy weekend for West Ham.

The Hammers beat Watford 2-0 at the London Stadium against Watford.

The three points pushed West Ham up to 12th in the table, level with Watford on 30 points.

Story of HR Manager Who Mocked an Immigrant’s Broken English Goes Viral

Despite a recent rise in hate speech and a lack of progress in ending discriminatory hiring of minorities and immigrants, those who feel empowered to blatantly discriminate against immigrants still run the risk of being instantly outed and facing the wrath of everyday Internet activists.  

This time the victim was Minh, a Vietnamese man in Seattle, Washington, who was preemptively threatened to be sent home by a hiring manager because of his level of English. When Minh responded to a job opportunity at Dash Delivery, he received a rude, mocking email from the HR manager, saying, “Let me tell you now, if you no speak English, I will send you home” with “if you no speak English” underlined.

Minh’s daughter Emily posted the email exchange on Twitter. “Non-English speakers really have it hard bc my dad just got rejected from this job offer,” she wrote. “All of emails we’re also very unprofessional & passive aggressive.“

Her original tweet had been liked by roughly 50,000 Twitter users and had 23,000 retweets as of Feb. 8.

It didn’t take long for the tweets to be noticed by a local attorney who contacted the delivery company to report the HR manager’s behavior. Soon after, Minh and Emily received an email from Dash Delivery, saying, “Our company is an equal opportunity employer and it is proud of its diverse workforce.” The email also stated that the HR manager had been fired following the incident.

Minh’s daughter Emily has since updated the story on Twitter, stating that while they were offered assistance to pursue legal action against the company, her father has opted to move on from the incident. Emily also posted a photo of her father’s English-to-Vietnamese language notebook to show how hard he’s working to find a job.

For immigrants and minorities in general, the situation of the Huyhn family might sound familiar.

Reports of discrimination and hate speech have risen since the 2016 presidential election. A poll by NPR revealed that nearly every group in the U.S. feels they suffer from discrimination. More than 70 percent of Latinos said they feel discriminated against, compared to 92 percent of African-Americans and 61 percent of Asians.

Moreover, hiring biases in the country haven’t improved in 25 years, according to this study, and it’s particularly tough for African-Americans and Latinos. On average, white applicants receive 24 percent more callbacks than Latino applicants.

The wave of hate speech and crimes across the United States has inspired project like ProPublica’s Documenting Hate, which aims to collect data of hate crimes and discriminatory practices, and The Southern Poverty Law Center’s Hate Map, which gathers data about hate groups in all 50 states.

Hollywood talent manager and record-label boss Scooter Braun knows a star when he sees one — he works with Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande and Kanye West — but it was another pair of famous friends that led him to his stunning Montecito, California, home, while it was still a diamond in the rough.

Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi (rather forcefully) convinced Braun, 36, and his then-girlfriend Yael Cohen, 31, to go house hunting during a fateful lunch in 2014.

The spouses endlessly talked up the seaside town, Braun tells Architectural Digest in the magazine’s March issue. “We were like, ‘We’re not going to buy a house.’ We weren’t even married yet!” But, he recalls, “when we got back to their house afterward, there was a broker waiting for us.”

Braun and Cohen fell for the third place they visited: a six-bedroom, 7,000-square-foot home originally built in 1916. “As soon as we pulled into the driveway, between all those trees, we kind of instantly knew that we were going to buy it,” says Braun.

The couple has since married and welcomed two sons, Jagger Joseph, 3, and Levi Magnus, 1.

With help from two of DeGeneres’s go-to decorators Kathleen and Tommy Clement, who also worked on Jennifer Aniston’s Bel Air home, they upgraded every inch of the house and the surrounding landscape, which now features myriad outdoor entertaining areas and two fire pits.

“I’m obsessed with fire pits,” Braun tells AD, “and that’s because some of the best concerts I’ve been to in my life have been around them. I can’t tell you how many times our friends have sat down to sing and play at the piano in the living room, but the real fun happens around the fire pits. We literally sit around and jam.” And, he notes not so subtly, “we are fortunate enough to know a couple of people who can really sing.”

Wayne Rooney explains why he wants to be a manager

Wayne Rooney has revealed that his main ambition after retiring from playing is to pursue a managerial career.

The 32-year-old departed Old Trafford over the summer to rejoin boyhood club Everton after a difficult season that nevertheless saw him become the club’s all-time record goalscorer.

And he has played an important talismanic role in a topsy turvy season for the Toffees, claiming 11 goals and three assists so far.

Speaking to Jamie Carragher in an interview for the Telegraph, Rooney explained how he always felt suited to coaching.

“The main thing I want to have a go at is management,” he said.

“I would love to stay at Everton in a coaching role or hopefully manager one day. It is something I want to do – to stay involved, but if that is not possible I will look to see where the opportunities are for me. I am determined to become a manager.

“From next season I want to be doing some coaching sessions with the Under 14s at Everton. It would be good to have all my badges by the time I have finished, but it is also about having the chance to carry on when I have so I can get straight into coaching.”

“Obviously my first objective is to do well as a player over the next few years. Then I hope the role can grow into something beyond that. It is something I will talk about with the club when they and I feel the time is right.

“It was Neil Bailey at Manchester United who started me on the ‘B’ licence. We brought in a school from Ashton in Manchester and I coached them at United’s training ground. I took the session on my own and found it very natural. I have never been shy to get up and speak in front of my team mates or anyone. It was comfortable.”

Rooney’s appearance on Monday Night Football earlier this week was met with plenty of praise for the Englishman’s observations and seemingly relaxed on-camera persona.

And yet, in similar fashion to Paul Scholes, you sensed that this wasn’t his natural – or preferred – environment. Rooney has only wanted to be on the pitch – the place that has been home to him for longer, and in more ways, than any actual domicile.

The former skipper flagged on a technical and physical level during the latter stages of his career but notably never hid from the spotlight, never stopped giving everything, and developed a greater understanding of the game at large. It is often forgotten that Rooney is one of the most intuitively intelligent footballers this country has ever produced.

These attributes, coupled with the ethic drummed into him by Sir Alex Ferguson, should put Rooney in good stead for a promising career in the dugout.

Former player claims Mourinho is the best manager in the market

Former Leeds player Olivier Dacourt has claimed that Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is the best person in the current market.

The Portuguese manager has faced some criticism of late with many pundits suggesting that he has not evolved with the modern game.

The rumours all began when Chelsea sacked Mourinho for the second time after some poor performances in the league before he eventually joined the Red Devils.

The Blues sudden decline in the competition led to many critics claiming he was no longer a good coach and has had his tactics found out.

Dacourt is one of the few people who aren’t associated with United who still believes Jose is a top manager if not the top manager in the world.

According to The Sport Review, Olivier said to bWIN: “He remains a great coach, all the great coaches are engaged, and I do not see anyone on the market stronger than him in his place.”

Since arriving at Old Trafford Jose Mourinho has hardly shown himself to be an outdated coach, managing to help stabilise the club whilst simultaneously winning the Carabao Cup and Europa League.

His second season in charge of Manchester United can yet prove signs of progress should the players succeed in securing a second placed finish and perhaps winning the FA Cup.

Either way, it’s clear that Mourinho is one of the best managers around but of course that doesn’t mean he’s free of criticism.

The former Real Madrid boss has endured the wrath of United fans for his inability to get results against the so called top six teams in the league.

His record with the club has been poor and supporters have yet to see a true, characteristic Jose tactical masterclass besides a match vs Chelsea.

We were acquired by Sprout Social!

Since we were acquired, I’ve had access to Sprout’s amazing publishing tool. Here are three ways using Sprout has affected my role as a social media manager, from a workflow and data perspective.

1. Everything in One Place

Every month at Simply Measured, we hold a Lunch & Learn event. The purpose of these events is to learn more about how we can better serve our current and prospective customers. Basically, an expert in social marketing comes to our Seattle HQ and Lucy asks questions about their day-to-day. Then other people from our office get to ask questions. Here’s a blog post with takeaways from one of our favorite Lunch & Learns.

One question we almost always ask is, “What does a day in the life look like for you?” Almost every time, the guest mentions the number of tabs they need to have open–one for analytics, one for each social network, and one for publishing–for me, that’s six tabs.

I’m happy to say that with Sprout Social, I can narrow it down to two tabs. Instead of opening up all six tabs, I can head straight to Simply Measured to take a look at how we did the day or week before so I can quickly adjust our strategy for the week to come, then pop into Sprout Social’s Smart Inbox to start engaging with our followers.

2. Optimized Processes

Social marketers have a ton on their plate. We’ll take any opportunity to optimize our processes, AKA get more time back. One example of a process I’ve been able to streamline since using Sprout is how I plan out tweets. In the past, I’ve done this in a spreadsheet for two reasons–to plan out for the week, and to be able to see our social content at a glance when I audited what happened after the week.

With Sprout Social, I can completely eliminate this spreadsheet because I can plan things out on the calendar view, then reference it when I look at the data.

As an added bonus, when I reference the calendar at the beginning of the following week, I can see the tweets that I wasn’t able to plan out–like the tweets that are sent out when we participate in Twitter Chats.

3. No Guesswork

A common obstacle that social marketers face is finding the best times to post on each social network. (Hence our four-part blog series on best times to post on Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and Instagram.) The reason this is difficult is because the optimized time is always changing as algorithms and audiences change.

Thankfully, Sprout Social has Sprout Queue and Viral Post. Sprout Queue lets you line up content in one place, then sends it out at preset times. Viral Post analyzes when your audience is online and interacts with your content to determine optimal times for your posts to be published. You can learn more about them here.

When we tested out how posts manually published compared to posts published through Sprout Queue, posts pushed out from the queue averaged 67% more engagement than normal tweets.

Bonus: Preview Feature

One thing I needed to adjust when I started using Sprout Social was the way I formulated a tweet. I normally formulate a tweet like this: one or two sentences that pique your interest in the post. This is how you get there: LINK.

Tweets were written like this because we uploaded a picture to every post rather than using Twitter cards. When you add a photo to a post, the link stays in the copy of the post.

 

But when you use Twitter cards, the link appears as a clickable card. As a result, I need to write it like this: A complete sentence/thought that piques your interest in the post. LINK

Notice how the bit.ly link isn’t visible?

The nice thing is that Sprout has a preview feature, so I can see what each tweet will look like before it gets published.
