Juventus vs Tottenham Preview

Juventus host Tottenham in the Champions League this week and the Italian giants will be looking to secure a vital first-leg advantage at home.

The Serie A side are full of confidence after their impressive win at Fiorentina. They have conceded just one goal in their last 16 matches and Spurs will have their work cut out here.

Meanwhile, Tottenham are in superb form right now as well. They have beaten Manchester United and Arsenal in the recent weeks. Despite the poor away form, they cannot be underestimated here.

Spurs have failed to win six of their last eight matches away from home.

Tottenham boost: Numerous key players left out of Juventus’ Champions League squad

Juventus have not named a number of key players in their Champions League squad to face Tottenham Hotspur at the Allianz Stadium on Tuesday in Turin.

Paulo Dybala, Juan Cuadrado, Blaise Matuidi, Stephan Lichtsteiner and Andrea Barzagli are absent from the two-time competition winners’ squad.

Spurs face a few troubles of their own also, with Toby Alderweirled and Harry Winks both missing the trip to Turin.

Juventus’ squad

Key players out

Dybala, Cuadrado, Matuidi, Lichtsteiner and Barzagli deal the Old Lady a huge blow ahead of the visit of Tottenham in the Champions League.

These absentees leave Juve light in squad options, particularly in defence with no Lichtsteiner and Barzagli.

Dybala is no doubt a massive blow for Juventus, but such is the quality of their squad the other four are players not usually in the starting eleven.

Tottenham’s Toby troubles

Alderweirled was a notable absentee from Tottenham’s North London derby squad that beat Arsenal 1-0 on Saturday.

Having completed 90 minutes against Newport during the week, it seemed likely he would return against the Gunners.

The 29-year-old has been dealt yet another setback, being left at Hotspur Way to work on fitness, having met with manager Mauricio Pochettino and his assistant Jesus Perez after Liverpool.

Juventus vs Tottenham preview

For Juve, it has been a spell of utter dominance, winning all 11 of their last fixtures in Serie A, including a 2-0 victory at Fiorentina last time out.

Despite so many impressive displays, the Old Lady still find themselves sat second, behind leaders Napoli, in what has been quite an enthralling race for the title in Italy this season.

Massimiliano Allegri’s side reached this stage of the competition after finishing runners-up to Barcelona in Group D.

For Tottenham Hotspur, this game concludes what has been a tough run of fixtures; but also a period in which they have really flourished.

Taking seven points from their last three league games, coming up against Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal, they travel to Italy at just the right moment in time.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side made it to the last-16 of the competition having taken a joint-English record tally of 16 points to top a group containing both Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund.

Major blow for Tottenham, this top class star won't play against Juventus tomorrow

Tottenham star Toby Alderweireld is all set to miss his side’s Champions League clash against Juventus tomorrow.

According to Telegraph, the Belgian defender is not a part of the squad travelling to Turin. Apparently, the player has been left in England so that he can work on his fitness.

Alderweireld has recovered from his hamstring injury and he made his comeback in the FA Cup last week. However, Pochettino decided to leave him out of the side for the North London derby as well.

It will be interesting to see how the player reacts to these omissions. Previously, Kyle Walker was also left out of some big games and the England international forced his way out of the club because of that.

Alderweireld has not agreed to a new deal at Spurs yet. If the Belgian does not sign an extension soon, Spurs might have to consider selling him at the end of this season.

The report from Telegraph adds that the player’s agent has refused to comment on the situation.

Alderweireld’s absence will be a big blow for Spurs in a crucial game. The Belgian is their best defender and he could have made a big difference against the likes of Dybala and Higuain.

Manchester City make contact with Juventus over deal for star man

Manchester City are planning to make a move for Juventus forward Paulo Dybala in the summer, according to Spanish source Don Balon.

The Premier League leaders are understood to have already made contact with the Italian giants over a potential summer move for the player.

Juventus, however, are reluctant to lose Dybala and would only be willing to sell the player should he push for a transfer away from Turin.

Dybala’s desire

The report claims that Dybala is keen to work under Man City manager Pep Guardiola, with the Spanish coach holding a mutual level of respect for the player.

Guardiola sees the Juve forward as a player with similar traits to Lionel Messi – a man who he worked very well with during his time at Barcelona.

The 24-year-old is also under the impression that moving to the Etihad is currently his best shot at achieving Champions League glory.

This season, City have transformed into an unstoppable force topping both the Premier League and their Champions League group.

The club is now viewed across Europe as one of the very best and being made one of the strong favourites to go all the way in the biggest competition in club football.

Pushing for a move

Juventus’ CEO Giuseppe Marotta claims that Dybala will only be let go should he push for a move away.

The defending Italian champions view the player as their biggest asset and a someone they are very reluctant to depart with for any sum of money.

This season, the Argentine has managed an impressive combined total of 22 goals and assists in 28 appearances in all competitions.

Marotta told Sky Italia:

“He’s a very strong player, on which we aim a lot.

But Dybala will undoubtedly remain at Juve, also because we do not need to sell anyone unless the same player asks.”

Max Allegri provides fitness updates on Juventus stars ahead of Tottenham

Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri this morning provided updates on the fitness of a number of his side’s players, ahead of their trip to Fiorentina tomorrow evening, and subsequent clash with Tottenham Hotspur next week.

Matchup

The return of the Champions League in 5 days’ time will see some mouthwatering fixtures played out, with Juventus welcoming Tottenham to Turin towards the top of the list.

Mauricio Pochettino’s Spurs looked extremely impressive on their way to topping a group that featured both Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund late last year, while Juventus, Champions League finalists in 2 of the last 3 seasons, finished runners-up to runaway La Liga leaders Barcelona.

Improving

While the Bianconeri often looked short of their best during the first-half of the campaign, the form of Max Allegri’s men has begun to pick up over recent weeks, with Juve having not lost a fixture since a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Sampdoria in the middle of November.

Making this run even more impressive is the fact that the Serie A champions have conceded just one goal over the course of their last 15 matches across all competitions (including games with Barcelona and Napoli, and a 7-0 hammering of Sassuolo at the weekend).

Updates

Speaking in a press conference ahead of his side’s crunch Serie A matchup with fierce rivals Fiorentina tomorrow night, Bianconeri boss Max Allegri was drawn on the fitness of several of the club’s stars:

‘[Juan] Cuadrado is still out but we all knew that would be the case, Dybala, [Benedikt] Howedes and Matuidi are out then the others are available.’

There was more positive news for fans of the Old Lady regarding electric winger Douglas Costa, though, with Allegri revealing:

‘Douglas is fine, but I don’t think he’ll play from the beginning because [Federico] Bernardeschi is fine and it’s only right that Bernardeschi plays in an important match like tomorrow.’
