Basel vs Manchester City Preview

Basel host Manchester City in the Champions League round of 16 this week and the Premier League giants will be looking to secure a big win in the first leg.

The hosts cannot be underestimated despite their lack of quality. They managed to beat Manchester United 1-0 at home in December in the group stages.

Also, Manchester City have been quite unpredictable on the road in the recent weeks. They have only won two of their last five in all competitions and this could be a tricky outing for them.

Man Utd legend tells Pogba to add this to his game

Manchester United legend Gary Neville has passed on some advice to Paul Pogba, telling him how he can improve his performances.

The Frenchman has perhaps unfairly come in for some criticism for his recent performances in central midfield with some fans claiming he lacks discipline.

Although he should certainly shoulder some blame, other supporters have pointed the finger at Jose Mourinho for failing to use him correctly.

Pogba has proven to be absolutely brilliant when playing in the 4-3-3 formation but seems to struggle when forced to play in the double pivot of a 4-2-3-1.

Neville believes that while this is true, the midfielder could add something else to his game to make him a better player for United.

Gary’s assessment of Paul as an individual is something that can be applied to other players in the Red Devils squad.

Some sections of fans have been absolutely disgusted with the club’s loss to Newcastle as they believe the quality of players are there and they’re simply not being used correctly.

A front four of Romelu Lukaku, Alexis Sanchez, Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial is as exciting as any on paper but for some reason they couldn’t take apart the relegation threatened opposition.

Lukaku had an extraordinary game in which he certainly didn’t deserve to be on the losing team but the others could’ve performed better perhaps.

Sanchez was impressive but was guilty of missing a chance as was Martial who was forced to play in the unnatural position of right wing.

Lingard meanwhile seems to have seen his purple patch of form come to an end and whilst he wasn’t poor, he could’ve been a bit more decisive as fans know he can be.

Liverpool boss Klopp makes Van Dijk warning very clear before Southampton game

Return

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has spoken about Virgil van Dijk’s mindset ahead of the club playing Southampton, after the defender of course pushed through a move to the Reds.

He claimed that the mindset of the player is OK, and while the fans may not be thrilled about seeing their former star, the defender will just have to get on with it.

“It is obviously quite special and yes, for sure, I will talk to Virgil about it. With other players I didn’t talk about it but for him yes, of course,” said Klopp.

“It will not be a normal game [for him], how can it be? It was a special story, most of the time really positive and then the end not that positive. And I think how football fans are they want to disturb everything we try to do to help their team and they will whistle.

“Is it nice? I don’t think so. Will it have influence? I don’t think so. But we are all human beings, we are influenced by circumstances.

“We have to accept it how it is: loud, not nice maybe, but still we have to play football.”

Top four

Liverpool, along with Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur, are all in a fight for the top four and Klopp knows that a good run at this point in the season is vital. The club cannot see their hard work go to waste, and while beating the likes of Manchester City is certainly impressive, they cannot then go and drop points to sides like Swansea if they want to once again be in the Champions League come next season.

A top four finish will be vital – especially when it comes to attracting the top class players they want come the summer and spending the Coutinho money.

Man United set to play their first game with VAR this month

Manchester United will play their first game with video assistant referee technology against Huddersfield Town in the FA Cup fifth round this month.

VAR was first employed in a competitive professional game in April 2017 when Melbourne City played Adelaide United and has since been installed in both Serie A and the Bundesliga, along with other divisions in Korea, Portugal and the United States.

The technology has been used in England for the first time this season during FA Cup meetings and had a notable impact on Liverpool’s 2-3 defeat to West Ham United.

And it has been confirmed that Man United will play their first game with VAR in place on 17 February 2017.

United would have certainly benefitted from the use of VAR for the challenge on Scott McTominay during the 2-0 win over David Wagner’s side last weekend – a clear red card and penalty.

In this sense, technology is a welcome addition to our game but the extent to which VAR is used, and how much time it consumes, is still a matter of public concern. Resentment towards it is understandable, particularly with the older generation, given the various caveats that still remain in its infancy.

A primary concern – and one that does need to be addressed – states that VAR decisions disrupt the vital flow of any game, along with excluding those in the crowd from its conclusions over vital moments.

But in similar fashion to how many would have been flabbergasted with the overly expensive, complicated and potentially dangerous implications of aviation, we will, over time, come to see VAR as a natural part of the game.
