Man Utd legend blasts these two defensive stars

Manchester United legend Phil Neville has destroyed the club’s defensive partnership of Phil Jones and Chris Smalling following the result against Newcastle.

The Magpies managed to grab a 1-0 win over Jose Mourinho’s men in a devastating loss to the club due to the impact it had on the Premier League table.

League leaders Manchester City now hold a 16 point advantage over United who now must be concerned with the clubs below them that are chasing the Champions League spots in the table.

Both Jones and Smalling were involved in the defeat and were heavily criticised for their performances as frustrations continue to grow.

Neville, who once played as a defender for the Red Devils, got involved with the criticism and didn’t not hold back in his assessment of the English pair.

According to Give Me Sport, Phil said: “They have got the best defensive record because they have the best goalkeeper in the world in David De Gea and [Nemanja] Matic out in front who protects them really well.

“But the last two away games [against Tottenham and Newcastle], Smalling and Jones have been a disaster. Against Dele Alli and Harry Kane, they got bullied.

“Against Newcastle, did they make many mistakes? No, but they created a nervousness and a tension. They were making decisions that were strange.

“They were making decisions all day where you were thinking: ‘What are you doing?’ They brought these two as the best young centre-backs in England.”

Chris and Phil were once expected to be Manchester United’s first choice pairing when brought in as youngsters and whilst that may temporarily be true, no one would’ve thought this would be the case.

It’s fair to say neither player fulfilled their potential and there’s hints that Mourinho feels the same way as he brought in both Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof to solve the problem.

Unfortunately Bailly has suffered with a few injuries and Lindelof is of course adjusting to his new surroundings, although there were moments of brilliance from him.

One would expect that Eric and Victor will become the new centre-back partnership for United and it’s one that has a lot of potential but fans will be a little more skeptic this time around.

Juve’s incredible defensive stats should worry Tottenham

Juventus vs Tottenham

On Tuesday night in Turin, the Champions League roars back into life.

Tottenham, who topped their group ahead of Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund, have been draw against Juventus in the last-16.

Both Juventus and Tottenham warmed up for the match with wins over the weekend.

Juve were in action on Friday night, as they beat Fiorentina 2-0 away from home.

In an impressive result from the Bianconeri, goals from Federico Bernardeschi and Gonzalo Higuain sealed the win.

As for Tottenham, they beat Arsenal 1-0 at Wembley in the north London derby.

Harry Kane was again the Spurs hero as the striker leapt like a salmon to head home his 23rd Premier League goal of the season.

Juve’s incredible defensive stats

But will Kane be so successful against Juve?

Arguably the Spurs centre-forward is coming up the tightest and best defence in world football right now.

Not only are Juve winning matches week after week, opponents simply cannot score against them right now.

Indeed, Max Allegri’s side haven’t conceded a goal in their last seven matches.

Moreover, Juve have only conceded one goal in sixteen matches. SIXTEEN!

Hellas Verona are the only team to have breached their defences, and they still lost 3-1.

It’s worth noting that in Juve’s first 18 matches of the season, they let in 22 goals.

Overall, Juve are conceding less than two shots on target per game.

Juventus injury problem vs Spurs

One of the players whom Juventus have been missing in recent weeks is Argentine forward Paulo Dybala. Dybala suffered a thigh strain in a match against Cagliari before the new year.

Dybala has been sidelined for over a month, but there’s an outside chance the South American star returns for the Spurs game.

Blaise Matuidi is out of contention. So is former Chelsea winger Juan Cuadrado, who is out for six weeks.

Everton ready to dump £30 million defensive flop Michael Keane

Everton are ready to offload £30 million defender Michael Keane.

The former Manchester United and Burnley stopper has failed to impress with the Toffees and manager Sam Allardyce will listen to offers for the 25-year-old.

Keane struggled to make the breakthrough at Old Trafford, but he did enjoy successful loan spells with Derby County, Leicester City and Blackburn Rovers.

He joined Burnley on loan in September 2014, before completing a permanent move for an undisclosed fee the following January.

Everton sealed a big money deal for Keane in July 2017, but the defender has rarely looked like living up to his lofty price tag.

Keane represented England at U19 and U21 level, before being called into the full England squad by interim manager Gareth Southgate for the World Cup qualifying matches against Malta and Slovenia in October 2016. He made his senior international debut in March 2017 in a friendly defeat against Germany.

Keane has been a major disappointment at Everton and a move elsewhere now seems inevitable.
